Victory!

Victory!

girl trek victory

GirlTrek’s National PrayerTrek is an annual walking competition for Black churches to step out on faith and encourage their congregations to begin a daily walking routine.  From October 1-9, thousands of prayer warriors hit the streets all across America to walk, worship and bear witness to their communities. The walking theme is the Nine Fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience (long-suffering), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

This was my first year participating in PrayerTrek and for me, it strengthened my resolve and commitment to living a “well” life. Google says that the word “well” means “in a good or satisfactory way”. When I think of being well in mind, body, and spirit it means that I will:

  • Take time for myself
  • Walk at least 30-minutes per day for my health and strength
  • Pray for my family and community
  • Meditate on what the Lord would have for me to do in service to others.

Living intentionally is not an easy task but one that requires determination and dedication. Many mornings I honestly don’t feel like getting up and often find many excuses for not moving. Yet, with discipline and commitment, I refuse to let that mindset distract me from my goal…so I drag my butt out of bed anyway! Once I get up and get moving, there’s no stopping me. After a few stretches and deep breathing exercises I am ready for the world!

PrayerTrek was mostly a solo trek for me except on day seven when I participated in the Human Trafficking Awareness 5K with my church and GirlTrek sisters. Solo Trekking has been very therapeutic and a way to ensure I fit it all in by walking and praying at the same time. When I return home from my walk/run, I take a few minutes to meditate and hear from the Lord.

This past year I have made great strides in living well and eating well but there is always room for improvement. Upon completion of my PrayerTrek I am more committed than ever to doing better in every aspect of my life. I am committed to inspiring and motivating others to live well and to help them achieve balance.

October 9: Self – Control

“Do you know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
Walking Assignment: Walk to a supermarket or convenience store and ask the Lord to grant you self-control to make the food choices that are necessary to maintain a healthy body. Pray for discipline in your eating choices.

Gentleness You are enough. Say it. “I am enough.” Repeat it to yourself all day. Sometimes we are tender to those around us, but harsh to ourselves. Caring for our bodies requires gentleness and self-love. Pray that you see yourself and love yourself in the same way that God loves you. “For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well.” (Psalm 139:13-14).
Walking Assignment: Take yourself on solo walking date. Walk to the spa for a pedicure or take a stroll.

October 7: Faithfulness

“Great is they faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!”
Walking Assignment: Today, walk to a park, school or fitness center with a track and walk 8 laps around – that’s two miles. There are times when it feels like life is taking you in circles – round and round the same old struggles – and you feel defeated and want to give up. Walk and remind yourself that God IS God and remains faithful to His Word that He will never give up on us.

October 6: Goodness

The Bible says, “ Make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge” (2 Peter 1:5). Today, we pray for our kids. We want good kids – not just smart kids. We pray that our schools will teach knowledge and virtue.
Walking Assignment: Walk to a local school, day-care center, or the library. As you walk, pray that God will lead educators to model and teach good character as well as academic excellence. Invite a girl in your life to take a walk with you. Take time to listen to her. Serve as a mentor on the trail. Ask her what she cares about. Give her positive and supportive feedback, good advice and kind words.

October 5: Kindness

Poet Khalil Gibran said, “The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention.” Perform an “act of kindness” in your neighborhood. Pray for the health of every person you pass. The Bible says, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:31)

Walking Assignment: As you walk, keep your eyes and heart open to what your community needs. Perhaps you’ll plant flowers, pick up litter; take books to a local senior citizen home, or give a card to a grieving neighbor – let the Lord lead you on this one! Start by greeting every person you pass with a warm “Hello”, “Good morning”, “God loves you!”
